The Mazda 3 i-Stop was evaluated in an AVTA effort to evaluate the effects of start stop technology on a conventional vehicle. Start-stop systems have the ability to automatically shuts down and restart the internal combustion engine in order to reduce the amount of time the vehicle is left idling.

- 2.0L 4 cylinder direct injection gasoline engine
- 6 speed manual transmission
- Secondary 12V power battery for engine start
- Engine start-stop function: engine assisted combustion start with 12V starter
- Engine ON trigger: clutch pedal
