The MY2011 Hyundai Sonata represents a P2 hybrid platform, allowing for operation of its gasoline engine, electric motor or any desired combination of the two.  The vehicle is constructed with a 2.4L Atkinson-Cycle engine and an AC synchronous motor each with the ability to independently drive the 6 speed automatic transmission.  This architecture allows for a higher electric-only vehicle speeds (tested at 81 mph) and increased engine-off operating capability over power split hybrid architectures.
