Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Fellow

Ali Erdemir of Argonne's Energy Technology Division has been named a Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). Last year, Erdemir received the Al Sonntag Award and the Allan A. Manteuffel Award from STLE's Chicago chapter for his development of a carbon coating that showed the lowest coefficient of friction (less than .001) when tested in a dry nitrogen atmosphere. Argonne Researcher Honored for Career in Engine Research

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) honored Argonne’s Ramanujam (Raj) Sekar by elevating his membership to the status of a Fellow, in recognition of his many “significant engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession” over a career spanning more than 33 years. Sekar manages the Engine and Emissions Research Group at Argonne’s Transportation Technology R&D Center. (More...)

Argonne Engineer Lauded for Contributions to National Automotive Research Efforts

The United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) has recognized Argonne National Laboratory's Walter Podolski for his exceptional efforts in supporting the collaborative efforts of USCAR and the FreedomCAR Partnership. Podolski, a chemical engineer, has worked with FreedomCAR's Fuel Cell Technical Team for the past five years, providing analysis and other technical support for a range of projects dealing with the development of fuel cells and the hydrogen that will be needed to fuel them. IPLAC Inventors of the Year

Bassam Jody and Edward Daniels of Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Transportation Research and Joseph Libera (formerly of Argonne) were selected as the 2003 Inventors of the Year by the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) for the process they invented to recycle flexible polyurethane foam from auto shredder residue. Argonne Honored for Technical Contributions to Challenge Bibendum

Argonne National Laboratory received an award for its significant contributions to Challenge Bibendum, the world's largest event designed to showcase and provide a real-world assessment of the progress in the development and availability of earth-friendly vehicles. The award acknowledged Argonne's technical contributions to the competition. In addition to Argonne, awards were presented to major original equipment manufacturers participating in the Challenge. Argonne was the only national laboratory recognized for its technical contributions to this high-profile event. (More...)

Truck Idling Study Shows a Way to Save Money

According to Argonne estimates, the average long-haul truck idles away about $1,790 in profits each year. Instead of letting their engines idle, operators of class 7 and 8 trucks should consider using separate devices for cab heating and cooling and engine-block warming. (More...)
