Argonne, Battery Tech Group among most-cited in past decade

Argonne ranks among the most influential energy and fuel R&D institutions in the world, when ranked by most-cited and influential scientific papers.

ScienceWatch, an online newsletter tracking trends and performance in basic research, features lists of the most influential and most-cited papers in various scientific disciplines, based on Thomson Reuters indexes of more than 3,700 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals across 100 disciplines. Energy and fuels research were the focus of a recent analysis.

Over the past decade, Argonne’s scientific papers in energy and fuels were cited 2,438 times, putting the laboratory 13th on the international list of most-cited institutions. Argonne is also ranked sixth in the world on the list of high-impact citations. Papers from Argonne’s Battery Technology Group were the most-cited work in the battery field from 1998 to 2008.

“These rankings show that Argonne’s work on new renewable energy is highly valued by the international community,” said Battery Technology Group Director Khalil Amine, himself ranked 11th on the list of total citations in the field of battery technology. His 41 papers have been cited 773 times. The Battery Technology Group develops advanced cathode, anode, electrolyte and electrolyte additives to stabilize the interface and to prevent overcharging for high-energy and highpower batteries with long life and abuse tolerance. These batteries have applications in hybrid-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.
