SPRING 2004 — Systems Assessment

MOVES/GREET Integration Provides a Common Modeling Framework for Life-Cycle Analysis

A new, integrated software system for life-cycle analysis — MOVES/GREET (MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator) — provides a common modeling framework that is accessible, transparent, easy to use, and broad in scope to help users conduct life-cycle analysis of motor vehicles and fuels. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Transportation and Air Quality, the CTR worked with EPA to create the MOVES/GREET integration.

This development builds on the CTR's earlier work with the versatile GREET computer tool (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation). GREET evaluates more than 35 fuel production pathways and more than 50 vehicle technologies/fuel systems on a consistent, systematic basis. The latest version — GREET 1.6 — includes new fuel production options (e.g., hydrogen production from a variety of energy feedstocks), as well as additional fuel cell and hybrid electric vehicles. This public domain model can be downloaded free of charge.

The new MOVES/GREET system will not be comprised of a single piece of software but instead will encompass the tools, algorithms, underlying data, and guidance necessary for use in helping R&D directions of new fuels and advanced vehicle technologies and developing national/regional emission inventory projections. It seamlessly integrates GREET's Well-to-Pump results with MOVES' Pump-to-Wheels capabilities.

The first version of the MOVES/GREET integration can analyze on-road energy and greenhouse gases only but will be expanded to include criteria pollutants in the future. A draft MOVES model with GREET integrated will be available in the summer for testing by stakeholders of EPA's emission model users.

The MOVES/GREET integration greatly expands the "what if" research potential for new fuels and advanced vehicle technologies.
